We opened our first mattress recycling centre in 2025, responding to the urgent need for responsible disposal and recycling of used mattresses. Today, our primary facility operates from our site in Evesham, Worcestershire, where we process thousands of mattresses each week — with a guarantee of 100% landfill avoidance.

According to the National Bed Federation (NBF), over 2 million mattresses are manufactured in the UK every year — not including imports. With the average double mattress weighing between 35–50 kg, the UK waste stream is seeing an exponential increase, with annual mattress waste expected to reach 245,000 tonnes.
Despite this, mattress recycling options in the UK remain limited.

The Recycling Process
At Recycle Mattress UK, we deconstruct all mattresses by hand. While this method is more labour-intensive and time-consuming than mechanical shredding, it allows us to achieve a much higher recovery rate and ensures better quality of recyclable materials.
Unlike alternative methods — such as automated shredders or unproven recycling machines — manual dismantling enables us to separate and preserve valuable components with minimal contamination, making them suitable for reuse across a range of industries.
- Steel springs → Recycled for metal manufacturing
- Cotton and polyester fabrics → Reused in insulation and textiles
- Foam → Repurposed for underlay and carpet padding
- Woven pads and felts
- Horsehair and coconut fibre → Currently without mainstream recycling markets, but can be repurposed for biomass fuel or alternative energy applications
The Recycling Procedure
Mattress Arrives in various forms – (weighed on and off counted – Ticket produced)
Visual inspection into Good, or poor quality material – Documentation checked and confirmed
Mattresses will be de-constructed to retrieve valuable commodities, such as PU Foams and Polyesters
The components are then baled and reprocessed into the material markets,
<7 % will be direct into RDF due to high contamination
